Srinagar, December 5, 2025: Socio-Political Activist and Senior Trade Union Leader Muhammad Altaf Dar Rajbagh today voiced urgent concerns regarding the deteriorating state of Kashmir’s vital water bodies, including Dal Lake, Nigeen Lake, Baba Demb, the River Jhelum, and Anchar Lake. He is calling for authorities to implement a comprehensive, scientific, and sustained conservation strategy to address the escalating threats facing these precious ecosystems.

While commending the recent revitalization efforts for Gilsar-Khushalsar Lakes, Altaf Dar emphasized that critical challenges remain unaddressed elsewhere. “What about the ongoing encroachments at Dal Lake, Nigeen Lake, Baba Demb, River Jhelum, and Anchar Lake?” he questioned.

Altaf Dar highlighted several alarming issues plaguing these water bodies:

Unchecked illegal constructions
Ongoing landfilling activities
Extensive weed infestations
Solid waste dumping
Shrinking water channels due to administrative negligence and weak enforcement
He underscored the interconnectedness of these ecological systems, asserting that a selective approach to conservation is inadequate. “Restoring one lake while neglecting others is an incomplete strategy. Damage to one water body ultimately affects all,” warned Altaf Dar.

Altaf Dar has urged key governmental and administrative figures, including Chief Minister Omer Abdullah, the Lieutenant Governor of J&K, the Office of the Deputy Chief Minister, and the Lake Conservation and Management Authority, to extend the same level of commitment and scientific planning demonstrated in the Gilsar-Khushalsar project to other crucial water bodies in the region.

He cautioned that without cohesive and coordinated action, ongoing encroachments and pollution will continue to jeopardize Kashmir’s delicate natural ecosystem, potentially undoing years of progress achieved in conservation efforts.

“Only a unified, science-led, and strictly enforced conservation plan can ensure the long-term protection of Kashmir’s lifeline water bodies,” Altaf Dar concluded.

Srinagar, Dec 2 : The Economic Offences Wing of Crime Branch Kashmir has produced a chargesheet in a high-value cheating case involving alleged fraud of Rs 38 lakh in connection with a fake gas agency scheme in central Kashmir.

According to officials, the chargesheet pertains to FIR No. 21/2022 registered under Sections 420, 421, 467, 468 and 120-B of the Ranbir Penal Code. The chargesheet has been presented before the Court of Chief Judicial Magistrate, Budgam against Zahid Bashir Shagoo, son of Bashir Ahmad Shagoo of Koker Bazar, Srinagar, presently living at Indrabi Colony, Narbal in Budgam district, and his wife Shugufta, also a resident of the same address.

The case originated from a written complaint alleging that Zahid Bashir Shagoo induced the complainant with false assurances of securing a licence for a gas agency and its extension counters. Relying on these promises, the complainant paid ₹38 lakh in good faith. The accused later furnished forged and fabricated documents falsely projected as genuine licences.

Following the complaint, a preliminary verification conducted by Crime Branch Kashmir established the allegations on the face of record. The probe revealed that Zahid Bashir Shagoo, in criminal conspiracy with his wife, deliberately cheated the complainant and issued forged documents to conceal the fraud.

Based on the findings, offences under Sections 419, 420, 468, 471 and 120-B of the RPC were established during investigation. Officials said the chargesheet has been submitted under Section 512 of the Criminal Procedure Code due to the accused remaining absconding from law for a prolonged period.

Authorities further disclosed that the duo already has an established criminal background. In FIR No. 13/2018 registered at Police Station Crime Branch Kashmir under similar provisions of law, the accused had earlier been challaned for cheating and document forgery. Besides, another case, FIR No. 31/2023, is currently under investigation against Zahid Bashir Shagoo at the Economic Offences Wing, Crime Branch Kashmir and is reported to be at its final stage.

Srinagar Dec 01: Kashmir’s world-famous copperware industry — known for its exquisite handmade ‘traam’ utensils — is fighting for survival as machine-made products flood the market, leaving traditional coppersmiths (Thanthur) on the verge of losing their livelihood.

For generations, copper utensils have been a cherished part of Kashmiri culture, exchanged as gifts during weddings and celebrations. Each piece passes through several skilled hands — from the coppersmith who shapes the metal to the Naaqash who engraves fine calligraphy and patterns. But now, artisans say their craft is being wiped out by low-cost machine-made copies.

Kashmir Copper Association, led by President Farooq Ahmad Wani, has demanded a complete ban on machine-made copper items, calling them a threat to the centuries-old heritage of the Valley.
They have also sought strict action against traders involved in the production and sale of such items.

Shah-Re-Khaas Traders and Chambers, headed by Chairman Bashir Ahmad Kanu, assured full support to revive traditional copper craftsmanship and protect the families dependent on it for generations.

The associations have urged the administration and police to intervene immediately and safeguard Kashmir’s precious handmade copper art before it disappears from the markets and homes forever.

Srinagar, Nov 22: CPI(M) leader Muhammad Yousuf Tarigami on Saturday criticised what he termed the continuing erosion of labour rights, saying workers are becoming increasingly helpless as labour protections shrink and wages remain stagnant. He was speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the seventh state conference of the Centre of Indian Trade Unions.

Tarigami said that despite the state being downgraded to a Union Territory, the Minimum Wages Act has still not been fully implemented. He asked why double standards were being followed and said labour laws have been weakened to the extent that even forming trade unions now faces obstructions.

He said daily wagers and low-income workers are struggling to survive on minimal wages, and many receive no compensation or support even in the event of death. He added that unemployment remains widespread and those who do find work often earn too little to sustain their families.

Tarigami said he was shocked that the central government was doing nothing to address the situation and was acting like a mute spectator. He said the ongoing conference would deliberate on joblessness, poor wages and the need to safeguard workers’ rights. He added that the workers’ movement will continue to raise its voice for those who have been pushed to the margins.

He said the proposed twenty percent power surcharge during peak hours would further burden the poor and urged workers affiliated with all political parties, including the National Conference, as well as the Chief Minister, to reject the proposal and give relief to people already facing economic distress.

Tarigami said twenty-nine labour laws have been abolished and replaced with four labour codes that exist mostly on paper, with little real protection for workers. He said social security cannot be claimed when workers do not have the right to protest, form unions or assert basic entitlements. He said workers cannot be caged under the four labour codes and denied their rights in the name of reforms.

जम्मू : बडगाम के विधायक आगा सैयद मुंतज़िर मेहंदी ने नेशनल कॉन्फ्रेंस पर तीखा हमला बोलते हुए कहा कि यह जीत उन “मायूस दिलों” की है, जिनके साथ एनसी ने 2024 के चुनावों के बाद किए गए वादों से मज़ाक किया।

उन्होंने कहा कि लोगों ने नेशनल कॉन्फ्रेंस को वन-साइडेड मैनडेट इसलिए दिया था, क्योंकि उन्हें उम्मीद थी कि मुश्किल दौर से निकालने की क्षमता सिर्फ उसी पार्टी में है। लेकिन एक साल से अधिक बीत जाने के बाद भी—

• 200 यूनिट मुफ्त बिजली का वादा
• 12 मुफ्त गैस सिलेंडरों का वादा
• आर्टिकल 370 से जुड़े राजनीतिक समाधान
• रिज़र्वेशन और अन्य अहम मुद्दों पर आश्वासन

एक भी वादा जमीन पर नहीं उतरा है।

MLA मेहंदी ने उमर अब्दुल्ला के बयानों पर भी सवाल उठाते हुए कहा कि कभी जम्मू-कश्मीर के लोगों को “बिजली चोर” कहना और कभी “जमीन चोर” कहना, जनता के अपमान जैसा है।

उन्होंने कहा कि जनता का यह फैसला सरकार को अपने वादों पर दोबारा सोचने के लिए मजबूर करेगा, क्योंकि अब लोग खोखले दावों को स्वीकार करने के मूड में नहीं हैं।

बडगाम/श्रीनगर. 1957 के पहले विधानसभा चुनाव से लेकर आज तक जिस बडगाम को नेशनल कॉन्फ्रेंस अपना अजेय किला समझती थी, वह किला आखिरकार धराशायी हो गया. मध्य कश्मीर का यह शिया बहुल इलाक़ा जिस सीट पर नेकां ने कभी हारना सीखा ही नहीं था, वहां इतिहास ने पहली बार करवट ली है और वो भी ज़ोरदार! नेशनल कॉन्फ्रेंस की यह हार सिर्फ एक चुनावी हार नहीं, बल्कि 67 साल पुराने गढ़ के गिरने की गूंज है. जब-जब पार्टी ने इस सीट पर उम्मीदवार उतारा, हर बार जीत उसकी झोली में पड़ी. सिर्फ 1972 में यह सीट हाथ से इसलिए छूटी थी क्योंकि नेकां ने पूरे जम्मू-कश्मीर में चुनावों का बहिष्कार कर दिया था. लेकिन इस बार? परंपरा टूट गई वर्चस्व ढह गया. ‘अजेय’ बडगाम में नेकां को जनता ने पहली बार सख्त संदेश दे दिया कि पुराने किलों की दीवारें अब वोटों से गिरती हैं.

जम्मू-कश्मीर के बडगाम विधानसभा उपचुनाव में शुक्रवार को पीडीपी उम्मीदवार आगा सैयद मुंतजिर ने जीत दर्ज की. इसके साथ ही नेशनल कॉन्फ्रेंस (नेकां) को बडगाम विधानसभा क्षेत्र में अपनी पहली चुनावी हार का सामना करना पड़ा. मुंतजिर ने उपचुनाव में सत्तारूढ़ नेकां से यह सीट छीन ली. मुंतजिर ने बडगाम विधानसभा उपचुनाव में सत्तारूढ़ नेशनल कॉन्फ्रेंस के उम्मीदवार आगा सैयद महमूद को लगभग 4,500 मतों के अंतर से हराया. निर्वाचन आयोग की वेबसाइट पर उपलब्ध आंकड़ों के अनुसार, मुंतजिर को 21,576 वोट मिले, जबकि महमूद को 17,098 वोट मिले. भाजपा उम्मीदवार आगा सैयद मोहसिन मात्र 2,619 वोटों के साथ छठे स्थान पर रहे.

अपनी जीत पर प्रतिक्रिया देते हुए, मुंतजिर ने कहा कि उपचुनाव का फैसला सत्तारूढ़ नेकां द्वारा अपने वादे पूरे न किए जाने पर जनता का जवाब है. मुंतजिर ने मध्य कश्मीर जिले में संवाददाताओं से कहा, “यह फैसला नेशनल कॉन्फ्रेंस द्वारा अपने राजनीतिक और विकास संबंधी वादे पूरे न किए जाने पर जनता का जवाब है. यह फैसला नेकां को जम्मू-कश्मीर के लोगों से किए गए वादों को पूरा करने के लिए मजबूर करेगा.”

इस बीच, पीपुल्स डेमोक्रेटिक पार्टी (पीडीपी) नेता इल्तिजा मुफ्ती ने पार्टी की विजय को जनता की जीत बताते हुए कहा कि मतदाता समझ गए हैं कि सत्तारूढ़ नेकां द्वारा किए गए वादे खोखले साबित हुए. मुंतजिर की जीत के साथ ही जम्मू-कश्मीर विधानसभा में पीडीपी के विधायकों की संख्या चार हो गई है.

वर्ष 1957 में हुए पहले विधानसभा चुनाव के बाद से यह पहली बार है जब नेकां अपने गढ़ मध्य कश्मीर के बडगाम में हारी है. जब भी नेकां ने इस शिया बहुल क्षेत्र से उम्मीदवार उतारा है, उसने बडगाम में हर विधानसभा चुनाव जीता है. नेकां ने इस सीट का प्रतिनिधित्व केवल 1972 में नहीं किया था, जब पार्टी ने पूरे जम्मू-कश्मीर में चुनावों का बहिष्कार किया था.

पिछले साल हुए विधानसभा चुनाव में अपने पारिवारिक गढ़ गांदरबल से चुनाव जीतने के बाद मुख्यमंत्री उमर अब्दुल्ला द्वारा सीट खाली किए जाने से इस निर्वाचन क्षेत्र में उपचुनाव कराना आवश्यक हो गया था. बडगाम से अब्दुल्ला के निर्वाचन से पहले, इस सीट का प्रतिनिधित्व श्रीनगर से नेकां के वर्तमान लोकसभा सदस्य आगा रूहुल्लाह मेहदी ने 2002, 2008 और 2014 में लगातार तीन बार किया था.

Srinagar, Nov 14: In a historic electoral shift, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Friday captured the Budgam assembly seat for the first time, ending the National Conference (NC)’s uninterrupted dominance over the constituency for decades.

PDP candidate Aga Syed Muntazir Mehdi defeated NC’s Aga Syed Mehmood Al-Mosavi by a margin of 4478 votes, marking a significant political breakthrough in central Kashmir.

His nearest rival, NC’s Aga Syed Mehmood, received 17,098 votes, or 27.1 percent.

Independent candidate Jibran Dar emerged as a distant third with 7152 votes, while BJP’s Aga Syed Mohsin Mosvi polled 2,619 votes.

Several other independent and party candidates secured smaller tallies, including Nazir Ahmad Khan (AIP) with 3089 votes, Muntazir Mohiuddin with 3030, Muhammad Sameer Bhat with 2534, Mukhtar Ahmad Dar of Apni Party with 1710, Muhammad Maqbool Bhat with 1225, and Mushtaq Ahmad Bhat with 904 votes.

AAP’s Deeba Khan received 459 votes, independent Aditi Sharma 283, Manzoor Ahmad Ganie of Rashtriya Lok Dal 223, Muhammad Shafi Shah of Sampoorna Bharat Kranti Party 213, Parvej Ahmad Mir of the Republican Party of India 212, and Shabir Ahmad Ganie of the National Loktantrik Party 171 votes.

Farooq Ahmad of Jammu and Kashmir National Panthers Party (Bhim) secured 57 votes.

None of the Above (NOTA) option received 544 votes.

In total, 63,099 votes were polled in the by-election, including 61 postal ballots.

The bypoll was necessitated after Chief Minister Omar Abdullah vacated the Budgam seat, choosing to retain his family stronghold of Ganderbal, which he also won in last year’s assembly elections.

Budgam has historically been a formidable NC stronghold, deeply influenced by the Aga family’s long-standing political presence.

The NC had retained the seat for decades, most recently in 2024 when Omar Abdullah defeated Muntazir Mehdi by more than 18,000 votes.

Before that, Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi held the constituency across three consecutive terms from 2002 to 2014, and NC’s Syed Ghulam Hussain Geelani won the seat in 1996.

This year’s campaign saw a noticeable shift on the ground, with senior NC leader and MP Aga Syed Ruhulla Mehdi staying away from active campaigning.

Political observers say his absence weakened the NC’s traditional support base and contributed significantly to the division of its core vote, ultimately benefiting the PDP.

Reacting to his victory, Aga Syed Muntazir said the result reflected Budgam’s dissatisfaction with the ruling NC.

He said the verdict was a protest against unfulfilled developmental and political promises. “Budgam has sent a clear message that it will not tolerate neglect. This victory is the result of fifty years of hard work, and the people have voted for real representation and accountability,” he said.

PDP leader Iltija Mufti said the outcome was a victory of the people, adding that voters had recognised how the NC had repeatedly failed to honour its commitments.

She said the people chose a party that would work earnestly for their welfare and upliftment.

For the PDP, the win carries substantial organisational significance.

The party, which previously had three MLAs, will now have four in the J&K Legislative Assembly, strengthening its voice within the House.

The breakthrough in Budgam is being interpreted as a sign of changing political winds in central Kashmir.

With a strong mandate and renewed confidence, the PDP is expected to build on this momentum as it prepares for the next phase of political challenges.

जम्मू-कश्मीर के पुनर्गठन के बाद वर्ष 2021 में दरबार मूव की प्रक्रिया को रोक दिया गया था। अब उमर अब्दुल्ला सरकार ने इसे फॅिर से शुरू कर दिया है। सरकार के दरबार मूव संबंधी आदेश के अनुसार श्रीनगर में सप्ताह में पांच दिन काम करने वाले सचिवालय के कार्यालय 31 अक्टूबर 2025 को बंद होंगे।

श्रीनगर: जम्मू-कश्मीर के कुपवाड़ा जिले के केरन सेक्टर में मंगलवार को सुरक्षा बलों ने एक बड़ी घुसपैठ की कोशिश को नाकाम कर दिया। इस दौरान सेना ने दो आतंकवादियों को मार गिराया। मौके से भारी मात्रा में हथियार और गोला-बारूद भी बरामद किया गया है। सेना की ओर से जारी बयान में बताया गया कि 13 अक्टूबर की शाम को सेना और जम्मू-कश्मीर पुलिस की एक संयुक्त टीम ने माछिल सेक्टर में एक विशेष अभियान शुरू किया था। यह अभियान खुफिया सूचनाओं के आधार पर चलाया गया, जिसमें यह इनपुट मिला था कि पाकिस्तान अधिकृत कश्मीर की ओर से आतंकियों का एक समूह भारतीय सीमा में घुसपैठ की कोशिश कर सकता है।

दो आतंकवादियों को मौके पर ही ढेर कर दिया
सेना के मुताबिक, सोमवार रात के दौरान केरन सेक्टर में नियंत्रण रेखा के पास संदिग्ध गतिविधि देखी गई। चौकसी पर तैनात सैनिकों ने घुसपैठियों को ललकारा, जिस पर आतंकियों ने अंधाधुंध फायरिंग शुरू कर दी। जवाबी कार्रवाई में भारतीय जवानों ने दो आतंकवादियों को मौके पर ही ढेर कर दिया। सेना के अधिकारियों ने बताया कि मारे गए आतंकियों के शव एलओसी के पास पड़े हुए हैं और उन्हें बरामद करने के लिए सर्च ऑपरेशन जारी है। इलाके में बड़े पैमाने पर सर्च और कॉर्डन ऑपरेशन चलाया जा रहा है ताकि किसी भी तरह की दोबारा घुसपैठ की कोशिश को रोका जा सके।

हथियारों का जखीरा बरामद
बरामद हथियारों में एके-47 राइफलें, पिस्तौल, ग्रेनेड, गोला-बारूद, रेडियो सेट और अन्य साजो-सामान शामिल हैं। सेना ने कहा कि यह घुसपैठ की कोशिश पाकिस्तान की ओर से आतंक फैलाने की साजिश का हिस्सा थी, जिसे सतर्क जवानों ने समय रहते नाकाम कर दिया। इसी बीच, दक्षिण कश्मीर के शोपियां जिले में जम्मू-कश्मीर पुलिस ने मंगलवार को कई स्थानों पर तलाशी अभियान चलाया। पुलिस ने बताया कि यह छापेमारी उन लोगों के घरों पर की गई जो कभी अलगाववादी संगठन हुर्रियत कॉन्फ्रेंस या प्रतिबंधित जमात-ए-इस्लामी से जुड़े रहे हैं।

जम्मू कश्मीर में 24 अक्टूबर को राज्यसभा की 4 सीटों के लिए वोटिंग होने वाली है। इस बीच कांग्रेस ने चुनाव नहीं लड़ने का फैसला किया है। जम्मू-कश्मीर प्रदेश कांग्रेस कमेटी के अध्यक्ष तारिक हामिद कर्रा ने रविवार को कहा कि उनकी पार्टी केंद्र शासित प्रदेश में चार सीट के लिए 24 अक्टूबर को होने वाले राज्यसभा चुनाव में हिस्सा नहीं लेगी, क्योंकि नेशनल कॉन्फ्रेंस ने उन्हें ‘सुरक्षित सीट’ देने से इनकार कर दिया है। यानी मुख्यमंत्री उमर अब्दुल्ला ने कांग्रेस को सेफ सीट देने से इनकार कर दिया है।

कांग्रेस नहीं लड़ेगी राज्यसभा चुनाव तारिक हामिद कर्रा ने कहा कि सर्वसम्मति से यह सहमति बनी है कि कांग्रेस राज्यसभा चुनाव नहीं लड़ेगी। तारिक हामिद कर्रा ने कहा कि कांग्रेस के केंद्रीय नेतृत्व ने राज्यसभा की दो सीट में से एक की मांग की थी, जिन पर अलग-अलग चुनाव होने जा रहे हैं, लेकिन नेशनल कॉन्फ्रेंस ने पार्टी को उन दो सीटों में से एक की पेशकश की, जिन पर एक ही अधिसूचना के तहत चुनाव होने जा रहे हैं। इसे ध्यान में रखते हुए बैठक में उपस्थित सभी प्रतिभागियों की राय थी कि सीट चार, सीट एक या दो की तरह सुरक्षित नहीं है। सर्वसम्मति से यह निर्णय लिया गया कि हम चौथी सीट पर अपना उम्मीदवार नहीं उतारेंगे। हम यह निर्णय अपने गठबंधन सहयोगियों पर छोड़ेंगे कि वे इस बारे में क्या सोचते हैं।”

तारिक हामिद कर्रा ने कहा, “चूंकि हमें सुरक्षित सीट की पेशकश नहीं की गई, इसलिए हम चौथी सीट पर चुनाव नहीं लड़ना चाहते।” बता दें कि नेशनल कॉन्फ्रेंस ने राज्यसभा चुनाव के लिए अपने तीन उम्मीदवारों के नाम पहले ही घोषित कर दिए हैं। हालांकि, नेशनल कॉन्फ्रेंस के तीनों उम्मीदवारों को गठबंधन सहयोगियों के समर्थन के बिना भी जीत का भरोसा है, लेकिन चौथे उम्मीदवार की जीत सुनिश्चित करने के लिए उसे भाजपा विरोधी हरेक वोट की जरूरत होगी।
